The City of Chandler just announced a hiring freeze across city government.  It is quite amazing to actually hear about a hiring freeze occurring within government.  Of course, we have been hearing for some time about Phoenix cutting employees but there is something surprising and ominous when we hear about government implementing many of the same layoff processes that we see in the private sector.

The culprit here is the decline in sales tax revenue across the city in combination with the overall economy.  Clearly, the Chandler real estate market has a role in this as well.

I have always admired Chandler’s planning focus in general.  In good times, this has entailed really working to bring strong employers and development to the area.  From the comments in the article, I sense a level-headed approach to resolving the upcoming fiscal year’s deficit.  Though difficulty decisions will likely have to be made, the comments suggest bringing Chandler’s government in line with financial realities.
